When it is time to refinish a pool, almost every Arizona homeowner ends up weighing the same three options: standard plaster, quartz, and a pebble-aggregate finish such as Pebble Tec. They differ in cost, durability, look, and feel — and because our climate is hard on surfaces, the right choice here is not always the right choice in a milder state. As certified Pebble Tec applicators who install all three, here is how we help homeowners decide.

Standard plaster

Plaster is the classic white pool finish and the most affordable to install. It gives that bright, traditional look and a smooth surface. The trade-off is lifespan: in Arizona's sun and heat, plaster typically lasts about 7 to 10 years before it starts to roughen, stain, or etch, especially if water chemistry has not been kept tight. Plaster is also the most prone to staining because it is the least dense of the three.

Plaster makes sense when up-front budget is the priority, for a pool you do not plan to keep long, or as a straightforward refresh on a well-maintained pool.

Quartz

Quartz finishes blend crushed quartz aggregate into the plaster mix. That added density makes the surface harder, more durable, and more resistant to staining and chemical etching than plain plaster. Quartz also opens up more color options, from soft blues to deeper tones that change how the water looks. It sits in the middle of the three on both price and expected lifespan, commonly lasting around 10 to 15 years here.

Quartz is a strong middle-ground choice for homeowners who want better durability and a bit of color without stepping all the way up to pebble.

Pebble (Pebble Tec and similar)

Pebble finishes bond small, smooth natural stones into the surface. The result is the most durable and longest-lasting of the three, with the best resistance to stains and algae and a distinctive, high-end look. In Arizona, a quality pebble finish commonly lasts 15 to 25 years with proper care, which is why so many homeowners view it as a once-and-done decision.

The two trade-offs are cost and feel. Pebble is the most expensive up front, and the surface has a natural texture rather than a glassy smoothness. Smoother pebble products and skilled application keep that texture comfortable for swimming while still giving good footing on steps and floors. Because the lifespan is so long, pebble often wins on cost per year — the metric that matters most over the life of a pool.

Why this matters in Arizona Our intense UV, summer heat, hard water, and high evaporation put extra stress on any finish and on water chemistry. A more durable, denser surface resists that wear better, which is a big reason pebble and quartz tend to outperform plain plaster in our market.

So which finish is best for Arizona?

There is no single right answer, but here is how we generally guide homeowners:

Choose plaster if

up-front cost is your main concern, or you are refreshing a pool you do not plan to keep for many years.

Choose quartz if

you want a meaningful step up in durability and color without the full cost of pebble — a popular balanced pick.

Choose Pebble Tec if

you want the longest-lasting, most stain-resistant, best-looking surface and you plan to stay in the home, where the longer lifespan pays off in cost per year.

Whatever you choose, the quality of the application matters as much as the material. A premium finish installed poorly will not last, while a careful drain, prep, application, cure, and startup gives any finish its best shot at a long life.
